HALEYVILLE - A two-vehicle crash late Monday afternoon, Aug. 26, on 11th Avenue in Haleyville near the Quick Shop, left one person dead and two injured.

MONTGOMERY - Auditors from the Alabama State Department of Examiners of Public Accounts - operating under the Alabama Legislature’s Sunset Committee - had “significant findings” against certain aspects of the Bear Creek Development Authority, specifically regarding mishandling of funds, which led to the board meeting Thursday, Aug. 22, before the Sunset Committee .

WINSTON COUNTY - Attorney General Steve Marshall today announced that 12 phone companies are adopting a set of principles to fight illegal robocalls, as a result of the work of a bipartisan public and private coalition of 51 attorneys general and the phone companies.

SMITH LAKE - Troopers in the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s Marine Patrol Division today, Wednesday, Aug. 21, arrested Nick Bowling Suggs, 50, and Jodi Wallace Suggs, 50, both of Decatur, on criminally negligent homicide charges stemming from a fatal July 4, boat crash on Smith Lake.

ADDISON - Complaints of illegal narcotics activity at an Addison residence led to the finding of 14 growing marijuana plants as well as methamphetamine, in what law enforcement have termed a drug distribution operation.

HAMILTON - U.S. Sen. Doug Jones hosted a town hall meeting in Hamilton on Monday, Aug. 5.

DOUBLE SPRINGS - A man wanted in Walker County on rape and sexual abuse charges led multiple law enforcement agencies on a high speed chase before being apprehended in the Double Springs area early Sunday morning, Aug. 18.

FAYETTE COUNTY - A single-vehicle crash at 4:33 p.m. Sunday, August 18th, has claimed the life of a Winfield man.

HALEYVILLE - Officials from throughout Winston County were joined by those from the state level in a crucial economic development meeting comparing the strengths of the county to incentives that can be provided from the Alabama Department of Commerce in helping more rural areas.

BIRMINGHAM - A one-count information filed yesterday in U.S. District Court charges a Birmingham psychologist with defrauding the Alabama Medicaid Agency by filing false claims for counseling services that were not provided, announced U.S. Attorney Jay E. Town, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services-OIG Special Agent in Charge Derrick L. Jackson, and Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall.

BEAR CREEK - The Town of Bear Creek is now left with a second council vacancy in less than a year after Daniel Green announced he was resigning at the Aug. 6, council meeting.

WINSTON COUNTY - Alabama Act 2019-507 became effective August 1, establishing new requirements for voters casting absentee ballots.

TUSCALOOSA - University of Alabama student Kylie Lovett of Haleyville, will participate in UA's Cooperative Education Program for fall 2019. Lovett will be working at BASF Corporation. Dillon Rackard of Phil Campbell, is also a co-op student at the University of Alabama. He will be working at Adtran.

 

WINSTON COUNTY - Gov. Kay Ivey has awarded a $308,904 grant to the Victims of Crime and Leniency Angel House in Montgomery to assist victims of violent crimes in 60 counties throughout the state.

HANCEVILLE - Wallace State Community College’s Department of Nursing Education has announced a joint enrollment agreement with the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) that will allow Wallace State students a seamless pathway from an associate degree to a bachelor’s degree in nursing.

DOUBLE SPRINGS - The long standing question as to if the Winston County Commission could use the entirety of ad valorem taxes authorized under Section 215.02 of the Recompiled Constitution of Alabama to fund a public hospital operating other medical clinics, has finally been resolved by an Attorney General’s opinion received July 24.

HALEYVILLE - Several questions and concerns were expressed about the newly revised anti-bullying policy, adopted by the Haleyville Board of Education in accordance with state guidelines.
