Apartment fire in Addison displaces family with young children

ADDISON - A fire in a downstairs unit of Cardinal Apartments in Addison Monday, January, 22, displaced one family, including two small children, and caused eight other families to evacuate.

Railroad crossing in Lynn blocked by train


This Norfolk Southern train has been blocking the intersection with County Road 356 since 6 a.m. January 23, creating major problems for businesses on the other side

LYNN - A main railroad crossing in Lynn has been blocked since 6 a.m. Tuesday, January 23, by a Norfolk Southern train that appears to be unoccupied, creating a massive disruption for many businesses and great concern for first responders.

The train is currently blocking the intersection with County Road 356, which has blocked the best path navigable to several businesses, including Pace Industries, Millport Lumber and Winston Machinery.

Winston County offices remain closed Friday

DOUBLE SPRINGS- All Winston County offices remain closed Friday, January 19, after a week of closures due to weather, announced Commissioner David Cummings. Plans are to reopen offices on Monday, January 22, with an emergency commission meeting set 9:45 am, at the courthouse, Cummings added. 

Winston County Sheriff's officials have been working with local fire departments, ALEA troopers, and municipal law enforcement agencies this week helping motorists either stranded or having minor accidents due to icy roadways, according to Sheriff's Investigator Jacob Eward.

Haleyville, Winston County schools virtual Friday

HALEYVILLE - Due to secondary roads still being deemed impassible  as of Thursday morning as well as a water issue at Haleyville  City schools that could pose a problem about ice, the schools   will be virtual this Friday January 19, announced superintendent Dr Holly Sutherland.

"We are not risking employee or student safety by trying to open school when it is not safe to do so," Sutherland emphasized. 

Sutherland encouraged all students to refer to their grade level and  classroom platforms,  online work platforms and iReady or their virtual assignments.
