Ida Sue Sutherland

Ida Sue Sutherland, 83, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 9, 2024 at Haleyville Health & Rehab Center. Sue was born on March 24, 1941 in Haleyville to Walker and Pauline Floyd Swims.

Visitation will be Tuesday, November 12, 2024 from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. at New Prospect Baptist Church in Haleyville. Her funeral will be at 1 p.m. at the church. Burial to follow in New Prospect Cemetery.  Pinkard Funeral Home will direct.

Sue eloped with Luther Gurvis Sutherland to Fulton, Mississippi on September 18, 1957 at the ripe old age of 16.  Gurvis was 17-years-old. They celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary this year. She was a proud resident of Haleyville and was a 1959 graduate of Haleyville High School. Sue played clarinet and was a majorette in the Haleyville Junior High Band and served as president of the Alumni Association, as well.

Sue worked at her daddy's cafe, the Walker Swims Cafe (best hamburgers in town,) the Haleyville Textile and owned Sue's Dixie Flower Shop and Sue's Plunder Parlor. Sue was a member of New Prospect Baptist Church in Haleyville and belong to the Order of The Eastern Star (OES) in Haleyville since September, 6, 1973. Sue was very outgoing and generous to others. She loved to travel, especially to Memphis and Tupelo to visit Elvis Presley's Graceland and Birthplace. To say that she was just an Elvis fan would be an understatement. She even had her own Elvis fan club called If I Can Dream Elvis in Alabama.

She is survived by her husband, Gurvis; daughters, Susan Sutherland and Stephani Sutherland Williamson (Damon); grandsons, Josh (Danielle) Sutherland and Juston (Robin) Sutherland, Brayden Williamson and Canaan Williamson; great-grandchildren, Lauren, Libby, Collier and Beckham and a host of extended family and friends.

Sue was preceded in death by her parents, Walker and Pauline Swims and sons, Michael Gurvis Sutherland and Rex Allen Sutherland.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to New Prospect Baptist Church, the Linda Campbell Sunday School Class or St Jude's Hospital.
