Bernice Bass

Bernice Bass, 100, of Haleyville, passed away Monday, January 13, 2025 at Lakeland Community Hospital.

She was born October 17, 1924 to Newt and Ellen Dodd. Bernice was the true definition of a Proverbs 31 woman; God was first in her life. Bernice was devoted to her husband, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and friends. She loved everyone and was loved by all who know her.

Visitation will be Thursday, January 16, 2025 from 1-2 p.m. at Nichols Funeral Home in Haleyville, where her funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Burial will be at Winston Memorial Cemetery. Brother Joe Spiller, Dr. Lance Hogan and Scott Rushing will officiate.

Bernice is survived by her children, Jeanette Clark, Jerry (Rhonda) Bass and Joan (Jim) Cooper; grandchildren, Rhonda Clark, Ginger Rushing, Scott (Lou Ann) Rushing, Sherry (Dewayne) Swinney and Misty Steadman; great-grandchildren, Heather Robinson, Clark Robinson, Andrew (Tashia) Benefield, Matthew Kelly, Griffin (Ashley) Kelley, Keenan (Maddie) Rushing, Jaycob Rushing, Kayley Rushing, Dillan Swinney, Blake Swinney, Chloe Steadman, Kinsley Steadman and Bryleigh Steadman; great-great grandchildren, Rickey Hill, Kyrie Benefield, Rylee Kelley, Cooper Kelley, Aubrey Kelley, Lily Rushing, Shepard Rushing and Waylon Swinney and a host of nieces, nephews and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Orbie Bass; parents, Newt and Ellen Dodd; son-in-law, Wayne Clark; sisters, Jewel Butler and Betty Morgan and brothers, Grady Dodd, N.E. Dodd and Cotton Dodd.
