The Northwest Alabama Council of Local Governments is applying to the Alabama Department of Transportation for an administrative, operating, and capital assistance grant under 49 U.S.C. Section 5311 of the Federal Transit Laws, as codified. Grant application amount is $745,093. The operating/administrative grant will provide financial assistance for public transportation service including open door contract service for the residents of Colbert, Lauderdale, Franklin, Marion, and Winston Counties during FY-2021 including the purchase of goods and services needed to combat contaminations related to COVID-19. The service currently operates Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. All residents must schedule service by 3:00 p.m. the previous business day. Fares for one-way trips are $3.00 up to 1.5 miles outside the city limits; $6.00 1.5 – 5 miles outside the city limits; $9.00 6 – 10 miles outside the city limits and $9.00 plus $2.00 per additional mile beyond 10 miles outside the city limits. No service changes are planned.
The capital grant will provide financial assistance to purchase vehicles during FY-2021. Funds will also be used for the JARC project to improve access to transportation to employment related activities for low-income individuals.
Copies of the detailed service description and project budget may be obtained at the NACOLG office, 103 Student Dr., Muscle Shoals between 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
A public hearing will be held on July 22, 2020 at 9:00 a.m. in the courtroom at the Haleyville City Hall, 911 21st Street, for public comment.
