14th annual Mark Forester Price of Freedom Race May 18

HALEYVILLE - The 14th annual Mark Forester Price of Freedom Race will take place on Saturday, May 18, rain or shine, starting at the Haleyville High School stadium/track at 9 a.m.  The race will feature a half-marathon, 5K and 1-mile run.
Registration is currently taking place at www.markaforester.com.  The price for the half-marathon is $75.  The  price for the 5K is $35 and the price for the 1-mile is $15.

Active duty military can run any and all races for $25.
Race T-shirts are also available, at a cost of $25 apiece.  Sizes are youth small through large and adult small through XX-large.  Shirts can be ordered online at markaforester.com.
Registration will also be allowed the day of the race, starting at 8a.m. at the football stadium.  
Awards will be given for first place only in each age division, with the awards presentation at approximately 11 a.m.
While the race is taking place through the streets around Haleyville, the 14th annual Mark Forester JAG 28 Walk/Ruck will also be taking place in memory of SrA Mark Forester, who was killed in action on Sep. 29, 2010, in Afghanistan while attempting to save a fallen comrade.    The JAG 28 Walk/Ruck is 28 miles throughout Haleyville and the surrounding area.  The entry fee is $40, with Haleyville City Schools employees’ registration fee being $20.

Participants will need to be at Haleyville High School no later than 5:40 a.m.  The walk usually takes 10.5 hours.  Attendees will be bussed from the school to Winston Memorial Cemetery, where they will visit Mark’s grave and do some memorial pushups, then begin walking.  
The walk will take participants through the Pebble and Rabbittown areas into the Bankhead National Forest past Kinlock Falls, then up into Franklin County before coming past Posey Mill onto Newburg Road, turning onto Airport Road to eventually achieve Dime Road before winding back to the school at approximately 5:30 p.m.
Staging areas will be set up every 5-8 miles, and a police escort will be provided for the walk.  Participants will need to bring their own blister and first aid kits, as well as power/energy bars.  Water, Gatorade, fruit and lunch will be provided along the route.  Registration is currently taking place at active.com.
All volunteers and participants are welcome to come out for a spaghetti supper Friday May 17, at 7 p.m. at the Haleyville Middle School cafeteria.

Proceeds from the Price of Freedom Race and the JAG 28 Walk/Ruck will benefit the Mark Forester Foundation, a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation that raises scholarship money for students in the Haleyville community, as well as contributes to other charitable organizations.
