Late fourth quarter score gives Pirates win

HALEYVILLE - The Winfield Pirates took the opening season win against Haleyville Friday night, 19-13.
The score was tied 13-13, when the Pirates scored with 3:36 left in the game on a completion from quarterback Joseph Estes to Joseph Cox. The PAT was blocked, one of two on the night for the Lions.
The Pirates scored on the first series of the night. Winfield won the toss and received the kick-off. On the eighth play of the possession, the Pirates were facing 4th and goal at the HHS 5-yard-line. Estes rolled to his right, but found no one open. He took the ball in for the six points, with Nick Nelson kicking the PAT. The 7-0 lead held at halftime.
Haleyville worked their way to the WHS 15-yard-line  in the first series of the second hal. With 4th-and-9, an interception was thrown in the end zone to stop the drive.
The Pirates’ second touchdown came in the third quarter. A heat timeout had been called, with Winfield at the HHS 22-yard-line. Logan Pollard brought down a completion with 37 seconds left in the quarter. Haleyville got its second blocked PAT to make the score 13-0.
Haleyville’s first score of the night came on a Camden Smith touchdown with 11:07 left in the game. The Lions went for two, but were unsuccessful.
The vicious Lion defense forced a punt in the next series to take possession at the HHS 47. Two plays later, Kane-Gravitt Tucker brought down an Eli Musso pass from about midfield. The PAT tied the game.

The late quarter score sent the Pirates home with a 19-13 victory.
HHS Head Coach Chris Musso commented following the game, “I was proud of their efforts at times, but I am disappointed. We will have to do a better job or I do anyway. We will make our corrections and move on.
“Central will be a well coached team next Friday night and we will have to be ready to play.”
Haleyville (0-1-0) will travel to Central of Florence (0-1-0).
