Double Springs FD no longer running medical calls in Black Pond

DOUBLE SPRINGS - A letter from the Double Springs Fire Department stating they would discontinue medical calls in the Black Pond community effective March 12, was unanimously approved by the town council at their regular meeting Monday, March 10.

Black Pond FD in urgent need of volunteers

BLACK POND - The Black Pond Fire Department doesn’t have enough manpower to run medical calls, one of the factors that has prompted the Double Springs Fire Department to no longer run medical calls in Black Pond’s coverage area.

Residents angry over conditions of roads in Bankhead


Black Pond Fire Chief Terry Tidwell says it’s a rough situation for firefighters responding to calls on County Road 315 due to its deteriorating condition.
DOUBLE SPRINGS - A group of residents who live along County Road 315 in the Black Pond community informed the Winston County Commission they have traveled a rough road trying to get road improvements made, urging commissioners to help them with funding and resources.

WINSTON COUNTY - A damaged cell phone found in a wooded area believed to belong to missing Double Springs man Joshua Flanagin brought two well-known state organizations to a wooded area at the end of County Road 8 for a search operation Saturday, June 17.

Black Pond Community Clean-Up Day Oct. 22

BLACK POND - The Black Pond community clean-up day will be Saturday, Oct. 22, beginning at 8 a.m.  Persons living along County Road 8 and any volunteers are asked to help clean up along the road.  Garbage bags will be available at the Black Pond Volunteer Fire Department, located on County Road 8, and the community is invited to come to the fire department for lunch around noon after the morning work.  Please make plans to help clean up and keep Black Pond a great place to live!

Key drug supplier arrested

BLACK POND - A major drug distributor was taken off the streets after the Winston County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant, finding 1.4 grams of cocaine, 112 grams of methamphetamine and 2.9 grams of marijuana found.

Vandals stealing tombstones in local cemeteries


A grave with a rock formation border has several rocks missing at Old Oak Grove Cemetery. The identifying rock with the initials “M.P.” on it is also missing. Josh Tucker and Dawn Carroll look over the grave.
BLACK POND - Cemeteries should be peaceful and pleasant final resting places for the deceased. They tell stories of those who came before us and should be respected.

Black Pond VFD donates masks to Double Springs Elementary

BLACK POND - Since school has started in a pandemic, and face masks are required for all students to wear, it can be tough for the younger students, as masks get dirty, they break and they are sometimes forgotten at home. The Black Pond Volunteer Fire Department saw the need and recently donated 500 disposable face masks to Double Springs Elementary School.

Lack of county road signs and road condition topics at Black Pond


A 1,200 foot section of County Road 8 will be fixed before striping. The road will be complete at this point.
BLACK POND - When a first responder is dispatched, one of the most vital items is information. An address is imperative for those first responders, whether fire, police or medical. Unfortunately, for those not familiar with the area, be it dispatch or the responder, problems arise when the address cannot be located. One major problem with this is the stealing of county road signs.
