Bankhead Recreation Areas now open


Clear Creek Recreational Area in the Bankhead National Forest is now open, as is Corinth Recreational Area. The popular sites will be open through November.

BANKHEAD NATIONAL FOREST - The USDA Forest Service has announced the opening of the 2018 recreation season for Alabama’s four national forests – Bankhead, Conecuh, Talladega and Tuskegee.
Many of the Bankhead’s most popular sights opened in early March for the season.  The only site that is still closed is the Houston Recreational Area, which will open May 25.  The campground at Houston is still closed.
With 28 developed recreational sites and more than 386 miles of trails, the Forest Service is encouraging the public to plan a trip in a national forest to experience the joys of nature.  Recreational activities include hiking, swimming, bird watching, scenic driving, boating, bicycle riding, horseback riding, camping and target shooting or picnicking.
The following are the recreational sites within Bankhead and the costs to visit them:
Owl Creek Horse Camp, $5 per night, open year round;
Owl Creek Trailhead, $3 per vehicle, open year round;
Flint Creek Trailhead (Multiple Use); $3 per operator    open year round;
Houston Campground - Closed;
Houston Day Use Parking, $4 per vehicle, May 25 - Oct 28;
Houston Boat  Ramp, $4 per vehicle, open year round;
Houston Pavilion    $20 (1-50 people); $4 day use per vehicle; May 25 - Oct 28    
Brushy Lake Camping; $5 per night; open year round with flushing toilets available March-November only;
Brushy Lake Day Use Area; $3 per vehicle; open year round with flushing toilets available March-November only;        
 Hurricane Creek Shooting Range; $3 per vehicle, open year round;
