ARLEY - Justin Harbison will be sworn in as the newest member of the Arley Town Council at its next regular monthly meeting on Monday, March 4, at 6 p.m.
At its Feb. 5 meeting, the council voted unanimously to appoint Harbison to complete the term of former Council Member Roger Fincher, who resigned in December for health reasons. The term ends in November 2025.
As of the council’s January meeting, Harbison was the only resident who had expressed an interest in filling the vacant seat, according to Mayor Chris Tyree. However, on Feb. 5, Robert Cleghorn addressed the council at the start of its meeting to express his interest in filling the vacancy.
“I’ve lived here in Arley 47 years,” he said, noting that he spent 21 years in the armed services and has been married for 27 years.
“I just feel like it’s my turn to help and maybe help the community,” he continued, adding that he didn’t want to “oppose too much stuff. I think ya’ll are doing a really good job, but there is an open seat.
“One qualification I’ve got is I've got kids in the school, I live here, I shop here, and this is my home,” he said. “Keep me in mind.”
