ARLEY - The Town of Arley will be celebrating a bountiful harvest, literally, on Saturday, June 13, celebrating the official grand opening of its first Farmers Market.
The celebration, planned from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.  at the Arley Farmers Market at 280 Helicon Road next to the Arley Fire Department, will feature Houston’s own Valley Groove performing, as well as inflatable activities for children and a shrimp boil provided by David Gibson, town officials said.
The event will also have gift bags and door prizes to give away, officials added.
Businesses that would like to set up displays or provide door prizes need to contact Arley Town Hall at (205) 387-0103.
Farmers and home gardeners will display a sampling of their fruits and vegetables in the farmers market’s covered building--formerly an equipment storage facility for the water department, noted Arley Mayor Johnny Taylor.
The public is encouraged to attend this free event, Taylor said.
Farmers who would like to bring a sampling of their fruits or vegetables that day need to go by Arley Town Hall and complete an application at no charge, town officials assured.
Farmers planning to attend the Arley Farmers Market need to go in person to the town hall to sign up, Taylor emphasized.
Farmers can sign up the day of the event, but are being encouraged to do so in advance, town officials indicated.
State Senate Pro-Tem Garlan Gudger voiced his support for the Arley project and upcoming festival. Gudger has provided assistance in helping make the upcoming event a reality, Taylor confirmed.
“I believe farmers markets show community involvement.  Everyone supports their local farmers growing local food,” Gudger stated.
“I am proud to help provide the Town of Arley, the mayor and councilmen and everyone in the community a grand opening celebration to allow everyone to fellowship and thank our farmers,” Gudger added.
