Youth and adult reading programs start soon at Winston County libraries

WINSTON COUNTY - Summer reading programs will start next month at libraries across the county.

The children's summer reading program for 5- to 12-year olds at Haleyville Public Library will start June 12, and registration is now underway and filling up fast.

The program will be held at the library at 10 a.m. on Thursdays except for July 4 and a special program that will be Friday, June 27, instead of Thursday, June 26.

This year's theme is "Color Our World."

Here is the schedule of events:

June 12, Snead's Farmhouse from Cullman, Ala.

June 19, Camp McDowell's "Amazing Raptors"

Friday, June 27, 3:30 p.m., at the Haleyville Safe Center, Ventriloquist March Griffiths of "Britain's Got Talent" (All summer library groups are welcome to attend this program.)

July 10, "Colorful Science" with Jan Mattingly, "the Science Lady"

July 17, Peter Bradbury of Magic City Legos

July 24, Finale at T5 Events

HPL will also have an adult summer reading program for those 18 and over. Those who register will be entered into a drawing once for every three books they read within a three-week period.

The library will also have take-home activities for preschoolers ages 2 and a half to 4.

Just as with the older children in the reading program, for every book blurb turned in, preschoolers will receive a book buck. Once they've collected five, they can select a prize.

The library scavenger hunt will also return this year on June 12. There will be a new item to find in the children's section every week.
