Jesse Fray Carter, Jr., 73, of Russellville, Ala., passed away on July 14, 2025, surrounded by family at his son’s home in Hoover, Ala. He fought a 2½ year battle with lung cancer following retirement.
Fray was born in Guin, Ala., on October 24, 1951, and grew up in Haleyville. He received his bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Athens State College in 1980. He taught 6th grade in Madison Co. Schools where he also coached basketball and volleyball.
Fray was an agent for State Farm Insurance Company from 1984-2023 dedicated to taking care of his customers in the Double Springs area. Fray loved traveling with his family and was an avid backpacker. Those who knew him will miss his kind spirit, optimism, interest in others and love for his family.
He was preceded in death by his father Jesse Fray Carter, Sr. and his mother-in-law and friend Vermey Greene.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Susan Greene Carter; two sons and their wives, Dale Carter and Aubrey Yeager, Hoover and Hank Carter and Jess McKean, Bloomfield, N.J.; his mother Hazel Shelnut Carter, Florence; sister Jo Carol Downie (Chris), Boston; brother Lee Carter (Pat), Haleyville; sister-in-law Karen Greene, brothers-in-law, David Greene and Pete Greene (Laura); nieces and nephews, Zach, Tiffany, Nat, Clint, Katie, Mary and Peter; and great nieces and nephews.
