Double Springs working on nuisance ordinance

DOUBLE SPRINGS - The issue of an eyesore property breeding rodents and foul odors on Adams Road once again surfaced at a Double Springs Town Council meeting February 9, with the town considering a public nuisance ordinance to address all forms of nuisances.
George and Marcia Paramithas and Albert and Pat Stockton, residents in the area of Adams Road, once again approached Mayor Kim Miller and town council members about issues relating to a property nuisance in their area, at the council’s meeting. These same two couples had attended a December 8, 2025, council meeting, expressing grievances over the same issue.
Miller stated the council was considering a public nuisance ordinance prepared by town attorney Jeff Mobley.
“We are not going to move on that,” Miller explained.
Miller, then addressing the council, added, “What we’re asking of you is to read this (ordinance), go over it, make notations of what you like, what you don’t like and get it back to us in the next couple of weeks, so we can revise this and make it something that everybody would be willing to go along with.”
Paramithas asked Miller if he could see the proposed ordinance.
“It is not prepared for you yet,” Miller responded.
Mobley noted the ordinance was still in draft form. “You will need to let them review it some,” said Mobley. “Then we will put it out and probably have a public meeting, where everybody can review it and comment on it.”
Mobley explained the public hearing would be held before the ordinance is approved.
“Things are getting worse, not better,” Paramithas pointed out.
The Paramithases and Stocktons had approached the Double Springs Town Council in December with claims of health hazards and other issues over an eyesore property, where unattended garbage and trash have attracted unwanted animals and caused foul odors in the area of Adams Road.
“Something needs to be done immediately.  Please, please,” Paramithas continued addressing Miller and the council at their Feb. 9 meeting.
“It’s health hazard. We are tired of living with rats,” Paramithas emphasized. “Please take this into consideration.”
Miller responded, “There is a lot of this that is going to be acceptable, but some things are going to have to be tweaked before we do this.”
Miller added the council would approve the ordinance after any changes are made.
“It needs to be something they feel good about doing,” Miller said.
“It’s not about feeling good,” Paramithas returned. “It’s about staying in compliance…”
“It’s about treating the public with decency and (being) fair,” Miller said, “and you are a part of the public, George.”
“Exactly,” Paramithas said. “That’s what I’m talking about. I am not here to argue with you. What I’m saying is there are state laws that dictate what must be done and what can be done.  I brought them here.
“But, forget it, as long as you take care of it, I’m good,” Paramithas added. “I’m good. Thank you.”
“We want to do it the right way,” Miller emphasized. “We live with these people. We have lived with these people our whole life.
“I get where you are coming from,” Miller continued, “and I feel for you. I would feel the same way.”
“We didn’t even have Christmas,” Paramithas pointed out. “We didn’t even decorate for Christmas. That’s how bad it has gotten.
“I know I am upset and I am sorry for that, but  I have reached a crescendo here,” Paramithas added.
Miller repeated the town was trying to do what they could.
“But there’s a lot of stuff in here we are going to have to tweak a little bit,”  Miller said.
“I get it,” responded Paramithas.
“This covers abandoned buildings,” Miller continued. “It covers a lot of stuff. With what we’re doing, we’re going to do it the right way.”
“It’s  health endangerment that I am worried about,” Paramithas responded.
