DOUBLE SPRINGS - Chase Cummins decided to be a mascot his senior year to help bring even more spirit to the activities at Winston County High School.
That decision has landed him a scholarship as a mascot for the University of North Alabama Lions. He will be one of three who will serve in that capacity. The candidates had to create a 1-2 minute skit and perform to their own music. Candidates were judged on creativity, fan appeal and prop use.
It was evident he was a popular man on campus, with the large number of family and friends who were in attendance of his signing recently on the WCHS campus. Cummins received his diploma a couple of weeks ago and is now getting ready to cheer on the UNA Lions.
“I am so excited,” he smiled. “I wasn’t going to tryout, but now I am glad I did. My mom, Coach Julie Veal and Bobby Daniels all asked me about it. The more I thought about it, I felt like I should go for it. I enjoyed being the mascot at Winston County. I wanted to do it because I wanted to bring even more school spirit to our activities.
“I think I would describe my personality as being loud and outgoing,” he laughed. “I
am an adventurous type of person and think that will help me a lot as the UNA mascot. I look forward to working with the coaches and members of the squad.
“I thank everyone who has helped and supported me while I was at Winston County High School and I am looking forward to UNA.”
“I appreciate everyone being here,” noted WCHS Principal Jeff Cole as the ceremony began. “It is a huge day, especially for Chase. I am proud of him.
“I want to welcome the head cheer coach from UNA, Megan Dye. Chase will be our second WCHS grad who will be on the Lion cheer squad. Meredith Daniel will be a senior this year on the squad.
“This has to be a job of a lifetime for Chase. He fits it so well. He enjoys it and has done a great job for us as a mascot. I really appreciate it.
“To his mom, thank you for raising a great kid. Chase thank you for all you have done for us. We are very proud of you.”
Cummins will major in elementary education.
