BEAR CREEK - The memories of  winning the  1A state basketball championship this spring  are still burning bright in the hearts of the team members and fans of the Phillips High School She Bears.
A ceremony was held Friday,  May 17, at the Attie Fleming Complex on the Phillips school campus to honor the She Bears, Head Coach Scott Veal, assistants, Deb Cook, Julie Hallman, Brandon Clement and Jacob Feltman.

HALEYVILLE   -  This year’s 9-1-1 Festival 5K Challenge, sponsored by Encore Sportsfit and Lakeland Community Hospital,  will be different than in previous years, and participants need to be aware of these changes, noted Beth Moore, one of the event organizers.
“This year will not be an extreme challenge or color  fun run,” Moore stressed. “This is a straight road race.”
The 5K run kicks off early Saturday morning, June 1, being one of the first events  held as part of the city’s annual 9-1-1 Festival.

CULLMAN - Jaycey Bowling, of Meek High School, is the new 1A state pole vault champion. She also shares her school record at 10 feet. After winning the state championship at 9 feet, she went for a new school record at 10.1 feet, but failed by the slightest of margins.
She was state runner up last year behind Addison’s Emme Baldwin’s 10.8 winning height.

FLORENCE - Both teams were strong on the rubber on Monday, May 13, at the Coffee/O’Neal Sports Complex, in Florence, for the north regional softball tournament. But Tharptown was just a little bit stronger at the plate in a victory over Winston County Lady Yellow Jackets. Elle Donaldson started the game for Winston County Lady Yellow Jackets and recorded 18 outs. She lasted six innings, allowing five hits and three runs, while striking out two. WCHS lost despite out-hitting Tharptown seven to five.

HALEYVILLE - The Haleyville senior adult water aerobics class will begin Tuesday, June 4, at 9:30 a.m., at the Neighborhood Facilities Building, located on Highway 13 South. Cost is $2 per class.

HALEYVILLE - It has been nine years since Haleyville native Senior Airman Mark Forester gave his life in the line of duty, trying to save a fallen comrade in Afghanistan.
A spaghetti supper, held at the Haleyville Middle School cafeteria, is sponsored by Todd Barton each year on the Friday night before the Mark Forester Price of Freedom event is held on Saturday.

HALEYVILLE - The 9th annual Mark Forester Price of Freedom Race and Memorial Birthday Walk  will be Saturday, May 18, 2019.
The route  for the walk will begin and end at Haleyville High School.

The 28-mile walk will begin at 6 a.m. and take approximately 10-and-a-half hours. There will be staging areas every five to eight miles with water.

LYNN - Jordan Davis, senior at Lynn High School, has signed an  athletic scholarship with Seton Hill University of Greensburg, Pa. The university was one of 22 others vying for Davis to attend on a football scholarship.
After carefully selecting those colleges of interest, a road trip was in order.
“We narrowed it down to five,” his father Randall stated. During spring break, the family traveled through nine different states visiting colleges before deciding on Seton Hill.

Softball is over for 2019 for teams in Winston County and Phillips High School, in Marion County. Lynn, Meek and Phillips were eliminated from the west central regional tournament held in Tuscaloosa, while Winston County was eliminated from the north region tournament held in Florence. The state tournaments begin Wednesday, May 15 in Montgomery for those who advanced from regional play.

HALEYVILLE - Haleyville Lions watched the second game game slip away early and couldn't recover in a 9-2 loss to Brooks on Friday, May 3, played at HHS.
 Brooks scored on a double by Brett Urban in the first inning, a single by Carson Villalta in the first inning, a passed ball during Trey Patterson's at bat in the first inning, a double by Carson Daniel in the first inning, a double by Kole Warden in the first inning, and a sacrifice fly by Villalta in the second inning.
Brooks got on the board in the first inning. Urban drove in one when he doubled.

HALEYVILLE - Both teams were strong on the hill on Friday, May 3, but Brooks was just a little bit stronger at the plate in a 2-1 victory over Haleyville in the third round of the baseball state playoffs.
Played at Haleyville, Ben Lowman started the game for Haleyville and recorded 21 outs, pitching a terrific game. HHS lost despite out-hitting Brooks six to two.

CURRY - The Haleyville Lady Lions lost the lead late in a 2-1 defeat to Curry, at Curry High School in the 4A Area 11 tournament. The game was tied at one with Curry batting in the bottom of the fifth, when Rae Ann Hall singled on a 1-0 count, scoring one run.
The pitching was strong on both sides. Curry pitchers struck out zero, while Lady Lions sat down six.
In the first inning, Curry got their offense started when Laycee Cordell singled on a 2-0 count, scoring one run.

CURRY - The Haleyville Lady Lions asserted their will over Fayette County on their way to an easy 11-5 victory Monday, April 29, in the 4A Area 11 tournament held at Curry High School. This was the second game for HHS in the tournament.
The Lady Lions got things started in the second inning. An error scored one run for the Lady Lions.
Lady Lions notched four runs in the fourth inning. The offensive onslaught came from triples by Kaylee Riddle and Hailie Moody and a home run by Ana Aaron.

CURRY - The Haleyville Lady Lions watched the game slip away early and couldn't recover in a 5-1 loss to Cordova on Monday, April 29, in the first game for them in the 4A Area 11 tournament, at Curry High School. The Lady Lions lost despite out-hitting Cordova seven to five.
Cordova scored on a single by Emma  Hyche in the second inning and a groundout by Jaqulyn Braswell in the second inning.
Cordova got things started in the first inning when Lillian Werling was struck by a pitch, driving in a run.

HATTON - Both teams were strong on the rubber Wednesday, May 1, in the 2A Area 14 tournament played at Hatton High School, but Winston County Lady Yellow Jackets softball team defeated Addison 3-2. Elle Donaldson allowed just three hits to Addison.
WCHS opened up scoring in the first inning, when Makayla Lindsey tripled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run.
Donaldson toed the rubber for the Lady Jackets. She surrendered two runs on three hits over seven innings, striking out three.

HATTON - The Winston County Lady Yellow Jackets softball team watched the game slip away early and couldn't recover in a 19-0 loss to Hatton on Wednesday, May 1.
Hatton scored on a double by Mallory Lane, a single by Emma Czervionke, a double by Emma Latham, a walk by Cloey Lovelady, and a home run by Ashley Berryman in the first inning.
Hatton got on the board in the first inning when Lane doubled on a 1-2 count, scoring one run.
One bright spot for Winston County  was a single by Makayla Lindsey in the first inning.

HATTON - Elle Donaldson threw a shutout to lead Winston County Lady Yellow Jackets  past Addison 8-0 on Thursday, May 2,  in the 2A Area 14 tournament played at Hatton High School.
Winston County got things moving in the first inning, when Makayla Lindsey singled on a 2-2 count, scoring one run.
WCHS tallied three runs in the fifth inning. The Lady Jackets  put the pressure on, lead by a walk by Lindsey and a double by Brenna Wakefield.
A single by Anna Grace Luker in the first inning was a positive for Addison.

Teams participating the regional softball tournaments include 1A Lynn, Meek and Phillips and in 2A Winston County High School. The following are play times and dates the ballgames at Bowers Park in Tuscaloosa.

BELGREEN - The Phillips High School She Bears are  headed to regionals Thursday, May 9, at Bowers Park in Tuscaloosa.
The She Bears lost to the Hackleburg Lady Panthers in the first game of the 1A area 11 area tournament held at Belgreen recently. PHS then played Vina  and won 17-2, followed by Hackleburg again and won 12-11.
The She Bears lost in the championship game to Belgreen 13-0.

GRANT - Haleyville Lions baseball team, currently ranked sixth in the state,  was on fire Friday, April 26, defeating Kate Duncan Smith Daughters of American Revolution 3-2 and 12-0 in a two-game sweep at Grant.
Ben Lowman allowed just five hits from the mound for the Lions. Lowman went the entire seven innings. He surrendered two runs on five hits, striking out ten.
In the second inning, Haleyville got their offense started when Lowman grounded out, scoring a run.

BEAR CREEK - Julianna Taylor, who graduated in 2018 from Phillips High School in Bear Creek, has signed a volleyball scholarship with Blue Mountain College.
 Julianna is pictured with her parents Patrick and Lisa Taylor and on the back row from left, assistant coach Deb Cook, head PHS volleyball coach Debbie Grubbs and Blue Mountain College head volleyball coach Reid Gann.
After graduating from Phillips High School Julianna received an academic scholarship from Northwest Shoals Community College.  

BEAR CREEK - Amber Markham and Lexie Dishner have played sports many years together and now they are getting the opportunity to do that at the college level.
The two signed volleyball scholarships with Bevill State in Fayette on Tuesday, April 23. The signing ceremony was held in the Phillips High School gymnasium.

LYNN - The Lynn Lady Bears  easily did away with Hackleburg 12-2 on Wednesday, April 24.
The Lady Bears Varsity got things started in the first inning when Breanna Barton grounded out, scoring one run.
LHS scored four runs in the fifth inning. Ashley Aldridge and Gracie Jordan each had RBIs in the frame.
Barton earned the victory in the pitcher's circle for Lynn. She went four and a third innings, allowing two runs on three hits and striking out nine. Chloe Gilliland threw two-thirds of an inning in relief out of the bullpen.

All series will be Friday, April 26 and Saturday, April 27 unless otherwise noted. First round 
for Class 7A will be April 26-27.

Abby Tidwell drove in four on two hits to lead the Winston County Lady Yellow Jackets softball team  past Meek 8-3 on Tuesday. Tidwell drove in runs on a grand slam in the third.

Winston County started up the offense in the first inning. Madison Comeens grounded out, scoring a run.

The Haleyville Lady Lions softball team had trouble keeping up with Russellville in a 10-2 loss on Tuesday, April 22.

Gavin West was bad news for opposing pitchers on Monday, April 15, driving in five on three hits to lead Haleyville Lions junior varsity past Hamilton 15-8. West drove in runs on a single in the first, a double in the second, and a single in the third.

Bats blistered as Haleyville collected nine hits and Hamilton tallied five in the high-scoring game.

Five runs in the seventh inning led Winston County Lady Yellow Jackets past Tanner 8-1 on Tuesday, April 16. The offensive onslaught came from singles by Brenna Wakefield and Madison Comeens and an error on a ball put in play by Kanesha Flanagin.

Haleyville's Lady Lions watched the game slip away early and couldn't recover in a 13-2 loss to Curry on Tuesday, April 16. Curry scored on a walk by Rae Ann Hall and a walk by Laycee Cordell in the first inning.

The Lady Lions struggled to put runs on the board and had a tough time defensively containing Curry, giving up 13 runs.

The Haleyville Lions  watched the game slip away early and couldn't recover in a 4-1 loss to Russellville on Tuesday, April 16. Russellville took the lead on a single in the first inning. The Tigers opened up scoring in the first inning, when Hunter Briles singled on a 3-1 count, scoring one run.

The Lynn Lady Bears softball team had all cylinders firing on offense on Tuesday, April 16, winning big over Hubbertville 12-1

Madison Comeens didn't feel much like getting out on Tuesday, April 16, tallying five hits and leading Winston County Lady Yellow Jackets softball team to a 14-4 win over Tanner. Comeens singled in the first, singled in the third, singled in the fourth, doubled in the sixth, and doubled in the sixth.

The Haleyville Lions junior varsity baseball team's effort to come back from down seven runs in the sixth inning came up just short, as they fell 9-8 to Russellville on Tuesday, April 16. The Lions JV scored seven runs in the failed comeback on a, a double by Hayden Tidwell, a triple by Hayden Armstrong, and a error.

The Winston County Yellow Jackets junior varsity's effort to come back from down six runs in the fourth inning came up just short, as they fell 12-11 to Carbon Hill on Tuesday, April, April 16.

HALEYVILLE - Lady Lions stayed in it until the end, but Cordova pulled away late in an 11-2 victory on Friday, April 19. The game was tied at two with Cordova batting in the top of the fourth when a single on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring two runs.

The Lady Lions struggled to put runs on the board and had a tough time defensively containing Cordova, giving up 11 runs.

The Lynn Lady Bears grabbed an early lead on its way to a 5-1 victory over Vina on Saturday, April 20. Lynn scored on a walk by Breanna Barton and an error in the first inning.

Barton took the win for LHS. She went four innings, allowing one run on three hits, striking out eight and walking one.

Breanna Barton threw a shutout to lead Lynn Lady Bears past Covenant Christian 6-0 on Saturday, April 20.

Saturday, April 20's game against Covenant Christian was a heartbreaker for the Lynn Lady Bears, as they lost the lead late in a 5-2 defeat. The game was tied at two with Covenant Christian batting in the top of the sixth when an error scored one run for Covenant Christian.

In the top of the fifth inning, Covenant Christian tied things up at two. An error scored one run for Covenant Christian.
